pumpkin
Use little pieces of fusible backed fabric to add the little "flying wedges" in the background. A button or some stitching for the pumpkin's eye spots.

bat
Some orange buttons or stitching for the bat's eyes will make them shine.

halloween cat
A little black stitching will give the cat's eyes a focus.

halloween ghost
Cutting little fusible-backed wedges of fabric give interest to the background and make it look like little bats flying in the sky.
