Once you have mastered the simple Half Square Triangle block (click here to see an earlier article with various quick methods to make HSTs) you can make an amazing number of different blocks that will result in a huge range of different looking quilts.
I particularly like blocks with a diagonal aspect since with simple turns of the block a quilt changes dramatically in appearance and can have many different looks.
The Contrary Wife block (diagram just below) is a 9 patch block made with 4 HSTs and 5 plain squares - easy, yes. And look at the variations you can accomplish with the block HERE.
I also came up with this simple layout of only 6 Contrary Wife blocks to make a Ribbon block (here is one in pink you might want to use for a Breast Cancer quilt)
